Re: Allo
Hmmm just buggered up my original erudite, funny and quite long reply to you all, so this time it's the short version and without smileys as they're what I'm blaming for it.
I'm more of a historical bookworm, but my missus does like the political regalia of the 3rd Reich, but she despairs at even the price of repros.
So this year when it came to our 20th wedding anniversary I thought I'd spoil her by giving her a BDM proficiency badge, and having each of the sprogs give her a mother's cross, (youngest 3rd class, middle 2nd class, eldest 1st class) and she was so delighted I've decided it would not only be a cracking idea to continue this trend but she'd also end up with a decent collection of something she not only enjoys but is also very unlikely to depreciate in value, both financially and historically.
Also my youngest, the boy Slug is very keen on the DJ/HJ to the point of wanting to reenact it. Something I'm not sure about but for reasons other than the rather weak-kneed complaint I've heard at a lot of shows, i.e.; "It's distasteful".
Found this forum via the rather excellent http://www.bdmhistory.com/ , and thought it would be a good place to get clued up so I'm not simply giving my cash away to some dodgy Ukranian, or similar, for fake rubbish.
I'm going to start with badges and tinnies, today just picked up these http://www.dasreich.co.uk/en517_nsf_1488.htm and http://www.dasreich.co.uk/tin078_mutt_kind_1895.htm neither a youth org item but very relevant to her interests as well. I'm off to the Royal Chatham Dockyards on Sunday as there's a militaria show there. Hoping to pick up a DJ or JM badge.
cheers,

HI
its good to find out which sites can be trusted so far you have done well as toby at das reich is one of the best out there especially for youth items, but before you buy please be aware of the amount of fakes available even at military shows these places are sometimes the worst place for fakes,if in doubt leave it or try and post pics here first there is a lot of people here with a lot of experiance who are allways willing to help out
all the best
stu
p.s we also have a few reenactors here

Re: Allo
Thanks for all the tips.
I've been watching the military shows for a few years now, which combined with me being a jeweller has given me a good eye as I already knew how to spot real aging on metals and enameling. Dodgy got to new heights this year at the Military Odyssey show with the "signed picture of Hitler in a period silver frame" for a mere 20,000 euro. The frame was simply not right, neither by age nor craftmanship, and if that's fake you don't even need to consider the picture IMHO.
Yes Toby at Das Reich struck me as a good 'un, and I do spend a fair amount of time digging around subtly to see who's got a good reputation and who hasn't. If I don't see anything at the mil show on Sunday I'll be giving Toby another bell.
